New Jersey Shluchim meet with governor Chris Christie
|
Chris Christie, a corporate lawyer turned crusading U.S. attorney, was elected as the state's 55th governor. Christie's win marks the first time a Republican has won a statewide election in the Garden State for over twelve years.
The governor has attended numerous events hosted by chabad of central jersey, as well as meetings with the local shluchim in which they discussed ways to further assist Jewish communities throughout the state.
In the most recent meeting with the Shluchim, Christie discussed efforts he was spearheading to secure government funding for Jewish private schools.
Another topic discussed was the security of Jewish institutions as a whole, and specifically Chabad Houses, which have been classified a target for terrorist and anti semitic factions following the Mumbai massacre. The governor explained that there are actually federal funds being made available specifically for this purpose. "The issue is", explained Christie, "not enough is being done by the local government bodies to ensure that this funding is alloted properly and accounted for".
The governor did promise however to do all in his power to assist with the security of local chabad houses, and jewish institutions at large.
